Stop criminalization of African youth gatherings in Philly

Alison Hoehne of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement in Philadelphia wrote this response to an article published this week on UhuruNews.com, "African youth in Philadelphia threaten to shut city down—InPDUM demands hands off the so-called 'flash mobs' (African youth)"

Uhuru! This powerful situation unfolding in Philly is giving us in the white community the opportunity to see first hand the reality that the Uhuru Movement has been exposing for so long -- that there are truly two realities in Philly and in the U.S.-- one experienced by the entire white population and a totally different one experienced by African and Latino people.

National Conference Deepens White Support
for African Liberation Struggle

The devastation began more than 200 years ago
Solidarity with African people in Haiti!
Africa’s Resources in African Hands!
Earthquake in Haiti
Statement from the
Uhuru Solidarity Movement

In the wake of the devastation following the 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2010, the African People’s Solidarity Committee, a white organization working under the leadership of the African People’s Socialist Party, expresses our deepest solidarity with African people in Haiti.

With at least 50,000 dead, hundreds of thousands injured and more than 3.5 million homeless, the conditions on the island have been described as unimaginable. With relief efforts moving slowly and the threat of mass starvation mounting, U.S. military occupation forces are being sent in, raising the specter of the brutal treatment of African people in New Orleans following the 2005 Hurricane Katrina.

U.S. president Barack Obama has promised a massive U.S. relief effort with a pledge of $100 million to be sent to Haiti as an outpouring of support comes in from throughout the U.S. and around the world. All major media sources have sent reporters to the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

We unite with the efforts to send massive resources into Haiti as quickly as possible.

But the disaster hit Haiti 200 years ago and its problem is the colonial devastation that has long subjected this proud and once independent and prosperous African-led country to live on a diet of mud pies and dwell in tin shanty towns.

Our Trip to Sierra Leone: Two Weeks that Changed the World
African People's Solidarity Day 2009
Photo from the Founding Conference of the African People's Socialist Party-Sierra Leone
By Penny Hess, African People’s Solidarity Committee

Flying into Sierra Leone on November 13 for a night landing we looked out the window of the commercial 757 jet to see no lights—nothing that signaled the major metropolitan area we were approaching.

Eventually, tiny runway lights appeared as we landed in Lungi, the airport for Freetown, the capital city of the West African country.

One of the most impoverished countries in the world, Sierra Leone has no electrical grid. The few existing lights flickering around town are fueled by generators or candles in a country where $2 a day is a middle class income and the average person lives only 37 years.

Yet Sierra Leone is the center of a lively and growing, world-changing liberation movement led by African workers determined to overturn the brutal colonial legacy, not just for Sierra Leone but for all of Africa, and put power into the hands of the people.

"What about the black community, Obama?"
Uhuru Movement challenges Obama on unwillingness to speak to African community interests

Obama demo

Demonstration outside the Obama rally

from UhuruNews.com

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — On Friday, August 1, the Barack Obama presidential campaign hit a serious bump in a St. Petersburg, Florida town hall meeting as members of the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement (InPDUM) challenged Obama on his unwillingness to speak to the interests of the African community.

While demonstrators outside chanted “Obama, McCain, its the same game,” InPDUM members inside raised a banner that read “What about the black community, Obama?”

InPDUM International Organizer Diop Olugbala challenged Obama asking, “In the face of the numerous attacks that are made against the African community or the black community by the same

U.S. government that you aspire to lead — and we are talking about attacks like the subprime mortgage that you spoke of that wasn't just a general ambiguous kind of phenomena, but a phenomena that targeted the African community and Latino community; attacks like the killing of Sean Bell by the New York police department and Javon Dawson right here in St. Petersburg by the St. Petersburg police, and Jena 6 and Hurricane Katrina, and the list goes on. In the face of all these attacks that are clearly being made on the African community, why is it that you have not had the ability to not one time speak to the interests and even speak on the behalf of the oppressed and exploited African community or black community in this country?”

This multi-media adaptation of the book, Overturning the Culture of Violence by Penny Hess, is both deeply challenging and profoundly hopeful. It provides a glimpse of pre-colonial Africa and the Americas and uncovers the crimes of white society from slavery to mass imprisonment of African people today.
